What is Lima syndrome?
Lima syndrome is a phenomenon in which hostage takers open their hearts to hostages, do them a favor, and even atone for their criminal acts. Lima syndrome originated on December 17, 1996, when a guerrilla from the far-left militant group Tupac Amaru infiltrated the Japanese embassy in Lima, Peru, and took embassy staff and others hostage. Fourteen hostages broke into the Japanese embassy residence and held more than 700 hostages, but hours later, they began to release some women and elderly and vulnerable people.
In addition, unlike the threat to kill hostages when they do not cooperate in compromise, they did not actually kill hostages, and they showed abnormalities of assimilating with hostages by allowing them to bring in medicines, requesting hostages, and confiding their situation to hostages. After the incident, psychologists later referred to the term Lima syndrome as a term named after Lima, Peru's capital.
What is Stockholm syndrome?
Stockholm syndrome refers to an irrational phenomenon in which a hostage assimilates into a hostage and sympathizes with the hostage-taker. Stockholm syndrome, as its name suggests, originated in Stockholm, Sweden.
In August 1973, there was an incident in Stockholm, Sweden, in which a criminal group occupied a bank and held bank employees hostage for six days. The hostages, who were with the criminals in a closed space for six days, became emotionally close to the criminals. The hostages, who were released six days later, spoke in defense of the hostages in media interviews and first used the term Stockholm syndrome when criminal psychologist Nils Bayrerott described the hostages' behavior on air.
There are more examples of Stockholm syndrome events. Patty Hearst, the daughter of a wealthy American, was kidnapped by soldiers who had different ideologies. Patty Hearst, who had been held for two months, later joined the attack on a bank by soldiers, and when she was arrested a year later, her father's lawyers claimed Stockholm syndrome and asked her to forgive him, but the court refused.
In 2002, a 14-year-old girl named Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped by a street psycho in Utah, the U.S. Kidnapped at an early age, Elizabeth Smart spent about nine months with him and was abused. She's been homeless with a lunatic for many months. During this period, Elizabeth did not do so, even though she was able to escape enough without physical restraint, but stayed with the criminal.
Lima Syndrome vs Stockholm Syndrome
Both phenomena began with hostage-taking. But crucially, Rima syndrome has the opposite propensity in that the hostage is assimilated to the hostage, and Stockholm syndrome has the opposite propensity in that the hostage is assimilated to the hostage.
