What is the Barnum effect?

It refers to the tendency to accept personality descriptions that are general and ambiguous and applicable to anyone as applicable only to specific individuals. In other words, it refers to the psychological tendency to regard people's common personality or psychological characteristics as their own characteristics. Usually, people who come to see a fortune teller have misfortunes, but those who accept them can accept that it only applies to themselves.

The Barnum effect is that the individual gives a high degree of accuracy to a universal personality description that is supposedly specifically tailored to him but is in fact vague and generally applied enough to a wide range of people. This effect provides a partial explanation for the broad acceptance of certain beliefs and practices, such as fortune-telling, religion and astrology, personality testing, and handwriting. Because hypotheses, faiths, and expectations need to be relevant, subjective verification appears when two unrelated or random events are perceived to be related to each other.

Example of the Barnum effect

Blood type personality theory
The blood type personality theory claims that a person's personality is determined or influenced by his or her blood type, which is actually wrong and unscientific. Many argue that scientifically valid hypotheses cannot be made about the effect of proteins on the surface of red blood cells on personality.

Shamans and Astrology

It is to predict the fate of humans through the divine person or celestial phenomena. I heard that there is also a tarot that is popular these days. In the tarot card, 78 tarot cards contain all the possibilities of human life. People want to find answers through cards on various topics they want to know. But tarot scorers each have their own way, and sometimes use their intuition.

Psychological Test & MBTI

Psychological testing is a systematic process that standardizes and compares sampling results for behaviors involving people's emotions, thinking, and behavior. Today, most of these inspection tools are mobilized. The Myers Briggs type index, MBTI, is a self-report personality type test that describes a person's personality in 16 different types.
