What is the halo effect?

The halo effect refers to the psychological tendency to conclude the entire phenomenon from being misled. It is a type of cognitive bias that is an irrational psychological phenomenon, such as intuition and preconceived notions. The halo effect is a term used by American social psychologist Edward El Sondijk in 1920 in his paper A Constant Error in Psychological Ratings.

Son Dyck said that a person's characteristics, such as appearance, social status, and age, give a positive or negative first impression to the other person, which excessively affects the overall impression that surpasses everything else.

The halo effect that is common in everyday life

People see the man they meet at the meeting as ordinary when he is not interested because he is ordinary in appearance and style, is average in height, and he is not very good at speaking. However, the man looks very intelligent and cool when he says he graduated from a prestigious university. When an actress in a television commercial is considered very pretty, she seems kind and considerate, and she seems to act well.

When people enter a restaurant by chance and order, they smile broadly and respond kindly, so they build trust in the restaurant that seems to be treating customers sincerely. He usually looks blunt and difficult to approach, but when he solves a project that was difficult for me to solve, he looks very capable and even feels wonderful.

The halo effect is what makes a person look completely different for just one fact. Halo means the background that makes something shine even more behind it, and it is also called the Halo effect after the English name. There are many phenomena that appear mainly through appearance, but the halo effect can appear as much as possible depending on the values and characteristics that the individual considers important.
