What is the initial effect?
The initial effect refers to a phenomenon in which the information or impression presented first has a greater impact on memory than the information presented later. We often say that the first impression is important because of the initial phenomenon. This means that it is difficult to change the impression of the first person recorded next. second
The reason why the two effects appear is that our brains accept information based on the information first entered because of the inertia. All information is interpreted based on existing information. So if you think negatively about the first person you've seen, you'll see negatively information about all that person's actions and words in the future.Even if the person gives positive information, the brain does not accept positive information by ignoring it.
A case of the initial effect
Solomon Nash, known as a pioneer in experimental psychology and social psychology, conducted the following experiments to prove this primordial phenomenon. It was to tell the randomized participants of the experiment about the characteristics of people A and B and then evaluate them. The personality of A and B was as follows.
A: Hardworking, hardworking, smart, angry, selfish, cynical.
B: Selfish, cynical, angry, hardworking, sincere, smart.
Then, when the participants were asked to evaluate the two, the evaluation of A was relatively good, while the evaluation of B was not good. But as you can see, the information about their personalities is the same. I just changed the order. Nevertheless, A received a good evaluation because the positive word "diligent and sincere" was first seen, but B received a bad judgment because the negative word "selfish and cynical" was first seen.
